General:
Annual herb from a taproot; stems simple or occaásionally few-branched, erect, 10-60 cm tall, spreading short-hairy to bristly-hairy.
Leaves:
Basal leaves lacking; stem leaves alternate, stalkless, heart-shaped or rounded, 0.5-3 cm long, clasping, palmately nerved, lowermost narrower with short stalks.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of false spikes borne in the axils of the middle and upper leaves; corollas deep purple to pale lavender, 8-13 mm long, 5-lobed, lobes longer than the tube.
Fruits:
Capsules, oblong or narrowly egg-shaped, opening above the middle.

Habitat / Range

Dry grasslands, rocky slopes, open forests and disturbed areas in the lowland and lower montane zones; infrequent in S BC; E to PQ and S to FL, TX, NM and CA.
